@MadeKillaSam Bitmap? Raster? A bunch of random pixels?

@starleaf Then what term should we use to describe these graphics?

@Yawackhary agree, bits are used for processors. the whole "8-bit"/"16-bit"/whatever-bit term is such a misnomer...

They're not "16 bit" sprites but just good sprites. One thing to praise on many Master System games is the colourful saturated style that the artists used thanks to its palette, it stands out when compared to the desaturated NES or C64 (NES sprites often look "gritty" and "grungy" to lack better words but can also detailed at the same time like the Batman or the Natsume games, there are even cartoony games like Tiny Toon Adventures, Panic Restaurant and Mr Gimmick). With a skilled artist, something like RoboCop vs The Terminator could be mistaken for a game on a 16 bit console if you never saw the Genesis original. A fair amount of Master System games have visually aged well including Sonic 1, all thanks to great talented artists.

Technically 8 bit can be from Atari 2600/Spectrum all the way to the PC Engine but you won't know by looking at the graphics. Many people say 8 bit when they are referring to anything that looks like NES or even a fake blocky look. Personally we shouldn't even be using the term for graphics...

Is it just me but are these sprites a bit "no so 8-bit" unlike what i have heard people saying? Like they're a little bit more 16 bit to me

I never realised until now that Sonic's spinning sprites actually aren't flipped when facing the left, and that the shading actually stays consistent. That's pretty neat! Shame this wasn't carried over in Sonic 2, but it was likely to conserve space

@AllHallowSteve That would be because the shading of the rolling sprites is focused on the right, so therefor there's no reason to use another final rolling sprite because the shading is focused in the same direction.

These are presumably supposed to be the sprites and their mirrored versions. But the last rolling sprite (the one that's just a blue ball), and all of the warping sprites, aren't mirrored. They're just duplicated. Is there an explanation for this that I'm not getting or is this a mistake in the sprites?

Also there is no mirrored version of the very last round shimmering sprite, I know the mirrored version looks extremely similar to this regular version, but even so it does look slightly different.

@Zander and Void
Don't you two realize that the comment is over a year old? He could be over the sheet being edited by now, so there's no need to respond to it at this point.

Sheesh Techokami. I'm sure whoever (perhaps a mod, which would be hilarious to see how that plays out) split up the sprites was just trying to make things easier. From the looks of it, you're very overprotective of your sheets. If it was a mod or staff member, they had every right to modify it how they want it. If you don't want your rips modified, then don't upload them. It's that simple.

...who edited my sheets? I understand it was to split up the Master System and Game Gear versions, but, next time, please ask me first. I'm usually on AIM and Skype. I'm not hard to get in touch with.

So, please, next time you need to modify a sheet I submitted, ask me first.
