I personally think he’s just a paid actor by Jon to scare Garfield. Would explain why he’s everywhere.
I think this was too dark that they decided to retcon Lyman's absence with him becoming an explorer and protecting a weird magic creature, leaving Odie with Jon.

This character design is definitely strange. Not sure why they brought him back in such a strange way.
For those of you who don't know who he is, (and I don't blame you. I don't think he was even around that long;) he was once Jon's roommate and the original owner of Odie. They phased him out and Odie was simply accepted as Jon's dog.
