Of course, they based on earlier creatures (and names), but Tolkien's orcs, as far as I can see, are pretty distinct from the old ones. Of course, YMMV whether they're distinct enough to be separate creatures (albeit based on older ones) or still essentially the same. Contrast with elves (which I think are also based on their Norse/Germanic versions). "Tolkinesque" elves have been a thing since at least Lord Dunsany's "The King of Elfland's Daughter". On that note, the not very Norse "Orlando Furioso" (which Tolkien also has read) has a monster called and "orc" too. Make of that what you will. |
