@Retro64 No need to apologise, I like seeing people discuss stuff.

But I suppose you're right if you don't stick to continuity you can have more creative freedom, (like how all of a sudden the fantastic kingdoms from Mario Odyssey existed)

Mister Mike didn't say anything, I just felt bad for flooding his comments

Thing is, that type of thinking opens up more possibilities in general of future things to do without being bogged down by attempts to avoid continuity snarls. The canon back then was pretty loose anyway, what with the constant fourth wall-breaking courtesy of Cranky.

I personally think it's nice to have a thoughtful conversation every now and again, but if it bothers MisterMike then I'll happily stop.

That is very true Miyamoto stated that,it just makes me sad because Rare always stayed with a canonical storyline (DKC1 transitioned it's story to DKL and so on). But since the franchise was left to Nintendo they adopted Miyamoto's thinking which is when the contradictions started to happen.

Sorry that this conversation filled up the tread Mister Mike, everybody focus on his great sheet!

"Jumpman" as a name was only ever in usage by arcade owner manuals anyway. By the time flyers for customers appeared, he was already called "Mario." Common misconception.

Anyways, what it amounts to is that, like Miyamoto says, there's no specific canon to the extended Mario franchise, and they're more like a big group of actors playing roles, which also explains why the Koopalings suddenly stopped being Bowser's children after Bowser himself called them his children in the Japanese SMB3 manual.

It's all quite confusing, because there's another factor that comes into play, Mario. According to Miyamoto, Jumpman from the arcade game is Mario. But yet Mario and modern DK both appear in Yoshi's Island DS as babies. This means they are both the same age. However we can see that Mario is at least middle aged in the arcade game because of his mustache but DK Jr. is still a kid.....wow, Nintendo really couldn't get a timeline straight could they?

Yet the Super Mario Kart section of the digital version of the book says DKJr. is the current DK's father, if I recall correctly.

@Doc von Schmeltwick I knew that, but some current sources contradict that, the most recent being the official PLAYING WITH SUPER POWER book to celebrate the SNES classic's release which states "He is, in fact Donkey Kong Jr., all grown up."

Actually according to current sources, DK Jr. is the current DK's dad.

The closest any game came to saying that DKJr was current DK iirc was having Cranky call DK "son" in DK64, which doesn't mean too much, I mean my grandpa does that with me.

This is great! And make sense too since modern Donkey Kong is technically DK Jr. (According to some games)
