I feel like the side-facing sprites are great enough on their own; it's the front-facing ones that set people off-guard.
I wonder if the influx of SMB1 Mario resprites could be attributed to this thing

I utterly despise how I considered this garbage to be in any way or shape good. And how this is my most popular custom too.
Not a bad sheet, though I do admit, front facing Mario looks kinda cursed.

It looks like an old sheet the artist made compared to their other stuff.
This sheet is pain.
First thing, this looks like a slight edit of the original on most frames.
Second: Do I need to say it? well I will, ?.
Third: The Nes can only handle 3 colors per sprite (unless if it uses sprite layers but smb1 doesn't use those for sprites,) and excluding the modern palette you have 4 colors on mario, red, brown, yellow, and white.
Edit: oh yeah and the fingers look AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
