@Yawackhary You seem to know a lot about prototype history mate. And yes I agree that Sonic 1 still has some unused leftovers in its source code. But back then after Naka said the ROM was lost there was a higher chance of finding it in the mid-2000s. Elsewhere this prototype is different from all of the other prototypes we have seen and I assume there was some pictures on some sort of box art of what I heard. Sonic 2's SW Prototype on the other hand was something else, way apart from the Tokyo Toy Show prototype. Naka said the security wasn't that good so the proto ended up being snatched and released into the public. TTS could've had that chance but it didn't cuz y'know, the whole ROM got lost yada-yada-yada.

It's really rare now if we were to uncover the ROM here and looking inside RAM data of Sonic 1 is not gonna help at all. But since TTS and Sonic 1 share differences there "can" be a possible term of finding it, but that's gonna take a lot of work. But just maybe if we can find some RAM data or source code hidden behind TTS we can uncover most things, but not the full ROM. And honestly, SEGA doesn't care if we discover a prototype of either any Genesis, Master System, Game Gear or MEGA/SEGA CD games. I can count on drx but as I mentioned in the previous comment, he'll fail to find the ROM, so really. There is nothing we can do about it. Bummer to say but I really wanted to see the prototype and before I used to do a LOT of research about its history and such. But we just have this, this is where it leads us to as of now.

Project A-ko's original film was considered lost for 35 years. Only to find out that it had been at the Togen lab all that time. It was only filed away incorrectly.

Now idk much about retro game archives and preservation admittedly, it may very well be as you say, but there also could be a possibility that it's been misplaced/overlooked in the archives as well?

Yeah, the ROM and the dev board or cartridge that would have been used is long gone. What will ever remain is what we've have seen, the only other thing we could find is simply more footage from the Tokyo Toy Show event but that's getting doubtful now. In terms of game preservation an area that is pretty bad in general, a fair amount of games have lost their source code/builds/development assets that in some cases only the final version ROM exists (or paper documents/drawings/concept art) and even some commercially sold games are still missing e.g. the original arcade version of Galaxy Force, Garfield: The Lost Levels (a Sega Channel exclusive). It is known that Sega did lose quite a bit of their archives during the Saturn era due to hard drive crashes/failures, Magic Knight Rayearth, Panzer Dragoon Saga and House of the Dead being many of the known casualties plus their headquarters moving throughout the decades.

Any prototype that we have we consider ourselves lucky (and a vast majority of prototypes that we DO see were found either in the US or Europe and extremely lucky with the SoA backup QA discs and the UK sourced Sonic 1/3 protos, the rest were leaked from the scene back in the day and ended up on pirated cartridges e.g. the Mega Drive Ninja Gaiden game. Japanese prototypes tend to be quite rare but do pop up). Sega did manage to keep an arcade board of the English translation of Wonder Boy in Monster Land, before its Wii/PS3/360 debut the script only existed in the Activision published home computer ports and either wasn't released or extremely limited as bad English translation bootlegs existed, they also kept a few unreleased games. Who knows, they might have an English build of SegaSonic the Hedgehog lurking about in their warehouse (the Japanese ROM does feature English graphics and the US warning screens but don't know whether it can be enabled).

It's actually rather lucky that Sonic 1 either still has its source code preserved (the Saturn Sonic Jam port) or at least some development assets (the mid-2000s mobile port with the UFOs in Marble).

@Nega-Guy The proto isn't playable or found as of now and Yuji Naka said they lost the whole ROM so the proto won't be seeking light as we know it. Don't start thinking about drx as our hope because I bet a mansion that he will fail to find the ROM. MCT already has everything figured out but the NEVERSEEN thing, the xEVERYONEx thing, the SEGASONIC thing? That's another thing we are confused of. But to conclude this, it might take YEARS to uncover the ROM if it were possible but right now, this is all the info we have. Sonic 1 Tokyo Toy Show is officially lost media.

Is it possible to find this prototype playable somewhere, or its just a very early prototype that only exists footage of it.

P.S. Is that buildings? I always thought it was just rock mountains.

The Sonic sprites look similar to Sonic Debut overall, imagine if MCT collabed along with this. lol

I just had a thought.

The title screen graphic is one of the earliest in the entire game, right?

Looking at this, I just figured out that Sonic's palette used for the title screen appears to be the one used for his Tokyo Toy Show sprites. It works pretty well!

So, is there a reason more of the sprites wouldn't use that same palette? Take the gradient on the "SONIC" text, for example. There's a bit of orange there that looks like it would fit for the mountains and maybe the rocks. The rocks have a few darker colors, which may have been shared with the palmtree sprites.

In the prerelease images, it seems to me that both the rocks and the mountains share a similar palette. They seem to share the same palette, but the quality of the images makes it uncertain. Same goes for the bushes, which I assume shares the the grass palette.

Here's my edited version of a portion of the mountain sprites. I used the palette from the Title Screen graphic.

Sorry the image quality is bad.

Perhaps the darkest blue color in the title screen graphic was used for the sky as well? It's hard to say.

But what I can say is; Considering how early the title screen graphic is, it's palette might've been used for some of the sprites dating as far back as the Tokyo Toy Show prototype!

It's interesting to think about.

P.S. Good job on the sprites! They're very accurate. (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧

@JoeyTheRabbit He added the bonus sprites as you can see to the left, right next to the title screen emblem.

Wow this is quite big.

I mean I could tell by your username but yeah you really did a good job there. Not sure if you’d do the rest of the prototypes to be recreated eventually.
