There are literally brown pixels in this sprite, was it really that hard to recolor Odie's ears?

Odie isn't just missing his dark ears, he's also missing his spot!
I really don't know why his ears are like that, I always wondered when I was a kid too. I can understand a couple frames being the wrong color in the cartoons, but this seems pretty glaring for just a single eight-frame sprite...
Why are his ears yellow instead of brown?
