BIG GUN
NUMBER ONE

There's also "Blast Field Generator" which is an interesting one, but I don't know where that one comes from

big clucking gun. Damn it, now I imagine the BFG shooting chickens.

personally i think it would be more creative (albeit a bit iffy on the copyright front?) for bfg to stand for "big friendly giant," but "big fucking gun" fits better with classic doom's vibe. i like to think "bioelctric force generator" is what it's officially called by the UAC but all the marines insist on calling it the "big fucking gun"

Well, the Chaingun's first appearance in the Pre-Beta had it so there weren't any barrels visible at the end of the gun (instead terminating at the disc), so I think the intent was that the bit at the end stayed in the same place while the barrels spun around.

i imagine the chaingun is meant to be, well, an actual chaingun (or at least something that fires out of the one hole with the barrels rotating in order to push more bullets through said hole) but the sprite artist just made it a gatling gun in the first person view instead

I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but the pickup sprite of the chaingun only has 1 protruding barrel, and now I'm angry that I can't unsee it.

@Dolphman I guess I'll settle for the name "Big Fraggin' Gun", since that's what the original Doom FAQ calls it.

@Dragonick "Big Fucking Gun" is the canon acronym for it. As confirmed by Tom Hall's design document.
The new games have a reference to it where the F word is marked

I think "Bio-Force Gun" and "Bioelectric Field Generator" roll off the tongue a little more than "Big Freaking Gun". I don't like swearing, anyway.

The acronym does indeed stand for "Big Fucking Gun" as confirmed by the original team and concepts.

@Jacen64 I think it could be "Bioelectric Field Generator".

Ah yes, the Big Freaking Gun.
Barely any DOOM fans call it the "Bio-Force Gun" nowadays.

That's the official one, but it was never used. John Romero rediscovered it two years ago in his files. He released a huge archive for the 21st anniversary, and more during April last year. It's a gold mine of unused and WIP content. Including the missing walk, hurt and attack directions for the Former Human enemies, Doomguy and Imp.

Did you make that pickup sprite for the pistol? It looks kind of like the one from SNES Doom's HUD, only scaled up.
