The game that started it all...
And by that I mean the 2d platforms of the Mario series.

@Doc: That's sorta the same situation with some Genesis rips. They should be using raw colors.

Conveniently, there are 4 slots, making the world maps look greatly categorized.

@Doc von Schmeltwick Thanks for the clarification.

@YoshiFan64 Once again, NES games do not have a "correct" palette. It all depends on the exact system and TV set or emulator. That's why there's a lot of variation with rips. However, some emulators are closer to what a modern TV would pick, and as such, they're better. Those really garish ones, however, are not, but it's not really a regional thing, more likely an old emulator thing.

The color palette used on the level maps is... weird. Was it on the PAL version and it somehow weaseled in to this American website?

...except every world after the first 8 is horrendously broken and are mostly just existing levels with different themes.

The Japanese Minus World is more unique as it has 3 levels, one of which is a copy of 7-3. The rest are different.

-1 is actually 36-1 and its just 7-2 but the end pipe is broken as it warps you back to the start.

safetyninja, -1 is like 7-2, but when you get to the end pipe, you go back to the start.

I thought the minus world was a copy of 7-2.

I think that makes everything save for the Minus World... but I could be wrong.

Really brings back memories. Too bad nobody makes games like this anymore.
