Hey everyone! I feel like it's been quite a while since I've done one of these so I'm here to bring you just over 800 new sheets this week!

With so much new content, it's going to be tough to highlight individuals but I suppose a good place to start is with the customs. There are a bunch of new Mario customs among a handful of others for a total of 41 new submissions to the section this week which is always awesome to see!

Outside of the custom section, there's obviously plenty more so let's get started. The DS / DSi gets 105 new submissions with a ton from Castlevania (thanks to rufaswan's continued efforts) and also a bunch from Mario & Luigi: Bowswer's Inside Story (courtesy of Greiga Master and our very own Ton), and a few more from Super Robot Wars W and Kingdom Hearts to round everything out. Kingdom Hearts also appears in our mobile section (mayphelion) alongside Professor Layton (Luna16) and lots more so there's plenty to see there as well! And to finish off this random selection, the Nintendo Switch sees submissions to four of its games this week - Cadence of Hyrule (brought to us by RTB and Dazz), Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Dakress), Paper Mario: The Origami King (courtesy of a variety of people), and one more submission to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for quite the showing this week as well! That's really just a small sampling of what this update has to offer though so be sure to check out what interests you and perhaps pass on a thank you to those who ripped it!

Before I go though, I do want to quickly cover one important event that just recently happened. As I'm sure many of you are already aware, a large amount of confidential and sensitive data from Nintendo was recently leaked. This may sound hypocritical coming from us given the nature of the content on this site but we can't support or participate in the large-scale theft of intellectual property so we will not be accepting any submissions from this leaked data. It wasn't just images that were released - the full source code of various games and a bunch of other internal-only data is now out there and that goes way beyond what we do here, especially since many of those games are still available for purchase in one form or another directly from Nintendo. So, out of respect for their works as well as our time and yours, please do not submit anything obtained from these files - it will be rejected on-sight.

On that note though, that does it for this week's update! Be sure to check in next week for updates on all four sites and in the meantime, enjoy your weekend!

Edit: Because this has apparently gone wildly off the rails, let me make one thing crystal clear. Not accepting content from these leaks is not a moral issue. Respect for the private information included in the leak may be a small component here but the reality is, this data was obtained through a targeted and overtly illegal attack on Nintendo's servers and there is nothing gray about it. When I said we can't participate in large-scale theft, that's what I was referring to - the incredibly illegal nature of how this data was obtained. Nintendo has already been removing the content from other sites which should be evidence enough that it was a good call, for legal reasons, to not upload it here. Morality was never my primary reason for refusing this content - it was just a bonus at that point.

Coincidentially, I was also talking about a similar issue in the Super Robot Wars W section in the DS/DSi portion of the site, more or less who can Banpresto use in each game. The Gigaleak is very much a legal problem in the scale of the series' own legal nightmare, as other SRW games hasn't been properly sorted by series, SRW W was the first to do so thanks to Domobot. W is very much a continuation of J, so it shouldn't be too hard to segregate each robot to the parent series.

As for the Gigaleak, I stated before. I'm with the mods here. As a result of the spaceworld leak being deleted, the final Pokemon GS game's icon is broken.

Welp, good thing I saved them before they were deleted. Not gonna upload them here of course, but still honestly a shame they had to be removed for legal reasons.

I’m not sure where anyone got the idea that my stance is a moral one. Sure, a small component of it was respect for the privacy of those involved but my real issue has always been the legality of the situation. In most cases, the source of other leaks on the site have been questionable. I’m not familiar with all of them but even the worst example here - a stolen cartridge from an expo - is still less overtly illegal than a targeted attack on the company who made the game’s servers. I chose to not accept anything from this leak on a legal basis and the fact that Nintendo is already having content removed elsewhere is proof that it was the right call, moral objections aside.

Sure, maybe I didn’t literally say “we don’t want to be sued” because I didn’t really think that was appropriate for an update post but the reality is, we operate in a legally gray area and this leak is much too far across the line to risk accepting. Nintendo knows about us and thus far has let us continue to operate - we don’t want to risk that stance changing so we won’t touch this leak. It’s really as simple as that and has been my view from the very beginning. The morality issue is just icing on the legal cake at this point, at least as far as I’m concerned.

Edit: Also, I didn't realize how recently the Space World demo had been uploaded. Now that I'm aware that data was indeed likely taken from this same leak (it obviously just got out a bit sooner than the rest), I've deleted the game.

Well, that kinda sucks. I guess I could find that stuff elsewhere though so it's not that big of a deal
(not like I'd use it anyways lmao)

@Ton No no, that's not what I meant. I meant that eve got warned because she kept pointlessly arguing with the staff and spreading insults. I didn't say KKM was probably going to get banned, I said probably going to get warned. Then I mentioned that eve didn't get banned for this conversation, but for a different reason.

@DogToon64 KKM isn't going to get banned. No need to say that.

@The KKM Uh, no, you're the one that isn't listening. Garamonde, and various other staff members are saying that those files have personal information and we'd basically be snooping. And it's illegal for us to view somebody's personal information. Even though some of those people might be dead now, it's still illegal

PS. If you don't watch it, you'll get warned like eve down below did. (except eve got banned for a completely different reason)
(and I don't mean to be backseat modding)

Like, in case it isn't clear- the problem here is that it's practical and pragmatical to not host gigaleak content to avoid falling into Nintendo's bad side, sure. And if you explain it like that and justify it like that, people get it. But if instead you make it about the morality of it, which Petie and Dazz have, you've just thrown away the entire archive, because if you actually bother to bring morality into this archive, you realise the vast, vast, vast majority of things here are here thanks to piracy, theft, disregard of authorship, etc. Which is fine, it's fine to go "archiving is more important than those things", but then why not the gigaleak, etc. By making it moral, you're making it a bigger problem than it ever needed to be.

@Garamonde You guys are the ones not listening, and being angry that we say you're saying things that you're saying.

I don't even want the Gigaleak assets in here, I think it's smart to not have them here, I just don't want the statements Petie or now Dazz on twitter have made that absolutely paint this in a moralistic light. Hell, Dazz literally said so - "While this will upset some users, our morality trumps your desire to not find these sprites elsewhere". If you don't want to be accused of being moralists about this, actually talk amongst staff and get a consistent message.

And if that consistent message continues to be Petie's and Dazz's "this leak was immoral because it has personal information and was breach of a server", then yes, you're hypocrites. Because the Spaceworld demo is from the exact same breach, so you're happy taking sprites from an immoral breach of a server in THAT case, but not this, despite being literally the same breach. Why, because back then you didn't know where they came from? Well, you do now. Take it down.

Why, morally, is "personal info and work of the workers, obtained from breaching into a server 30 years later" worse than "direct physical theft of the work of the workers, before the game was even out?" I notice Dazz etc keep referring to the Sonic 3 beta since that's convenient, they can just say drx bought it from a prototype seller. But the Simon Wai version? You're morally ok with hosting content coming from theft of Sega's property?

Why are Nintendo workers more worth being morally concerned about than children who did fanart a decade ago? Why does their work get to be uploaded here without permission?

All this could've been avoided if you'd told Petie, Dazz, etc to get off their high horses about how THIS leak is so bad, but all the piracy, theft, etc that this site's built upon otherwise, that's just fine. Or did every single sheet here get ripped directly from a legally bought cartridge?

Make a final statement where you go "we're just afraid of lawyers", like what you just wrote, Garamonde. Make it publicly, and make Dazz and Petie and so on stop contradicting. Until then you'll keep being hypocrites and I'll keep insisting you remove at the very least both the Spaceworld Demo page and all MFZ reuploads you didn't get explicit permission to upload.

Alright, listen. We should not have to keep explaining ourselves on this matter, but here we are. Nobody listens.

The reason we cannot host these leaks as opposed to the others is not a "morality" thing. It's a LEGAL thing. I can't go into details because that's confidential information (I'll get in trouble if I make it public), but simply put, we won't get in trouble for hosting those.

We WILL get in trouble if we host the new ones because of all the sensitive documents that got leaked with it, especially given Nintendo's been taking down links to said content, probably for said reasons. So yes, we'd like to not dig ourselves a grave.

And no, we are not removing what we currently have because we KNOW WHY we CAN keep them. Don't worry, nobody dictates what we host except the companies whose assets we host so we are not removing them unless we get an actual DMCA. And NO, we are not hosting these new assets or else it's bye-bye TSR. Do you want that to happen? And finally, NO, we do not have double standards OR are we hypocrites, for not hosting these for the reasons explained above. End of story. So stop asking. And stop insulting us. I am quite certain that all of us know what we are doing, given the fact that we actually run a website like this. I'm sorry you people don't understand that.

@The KKM ...Or go to another website that probably has those sprites and models if you want them that badly

@SpritZ (Last paragraph, first sentence): Same, I want to have a relaxed conversation here too

@KKM please refer to my previous comments.

This isn't just getting the assets out of the cartridge this is hacking into corporate servers and obtaining the information through far more illicit means. Forget about stolen cartridges, forget about what company it is, and finally just forget about your understanding of the morality in this kind of thing.

Hacking into corporate emails is a different ball game than just ripping from a cartridge. Plain and simple.

What would REALLY happen if Nintendo know site just now?
They'll probably forcing here to remove anything like Super Mario.
@The KKM
Dude, stop.
Don't forcing this site to remove rare gems like unused Gen 2 Pokemon sheet.

@The KKM Taking down everything that you've told us to remove is like renaming The Spriters Resource to The Legal Resource. There's no need to set the bar high my dude! If Nintendo (or any other company for that matter) have yet to take legal action against the site, then we're probably doing something right.

SEGA is quite relaxed when it comes to what people do with their IP, as far as I know they have yet to do anything serious to DRX for releasing the ROM. (And, they probably never will.)

Also.. Why are you here then if you want all of this stuff removed? Are you upset because the leaks aren't being uploaded to the site? Or are you just here to rant?

I want us to have a civilized and relaxed conversation here. I want to hear your side of the story but I also want you to hear ours. ...Please? (´・ω・`)?

OR, instead of taking a "we can't support or participate in the large-scale theft of intellectual property" stance that just makes you total hypocrites, take the much more honest "we're afraid of their lawyers" stance and people'll actually understand.

"are generally less shady and damaging" ACTUAL LITERAL PHYSICALLY STOLEN CARTRIDGE FROM AN EXPO
Also, look at what you're saying. They say "we can't support or participate in the large-scale theft of intellectual property", you say "it's ok when it's Sega".
ALSO, how about all those old MFZ sprite sheets that said ONLY HOST ON MFZ? Was each individual author asked about having it hosted here?
Petie has asked "what's the point, pushing that there's a double standard will only result in taking down the other pages, not hosting Gigaleak". Yes, that's the point. You want to make this a moral standard, have a moral standard. Take down all protos, take down all hack rips, take down all custom sheets you uploaded without permission.

...Spoke too soon.

The difference with the Sonic protos is that 1. it's Sega, who are generally more relaxed in terms of what fans do, and 2. the ways that the roms were acquired are generally less shady and damaging. At least in terms of the Simon Wai proto, it's cartridge and rom were literally the only things stolen.

Hey, hey, I found uploaded content that's from the same leak by Wack0 that you're now refusing to upload! Guys, can't be having that! This better be taken down fast, it's theft, after all. https://www.spriters-resource.com/game_boy_gbc/pokemongoldsilverspaceworld1997prototype

Will you also be removing any content uploaded that's from the Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 Betas which were similarly leaked, in cases physically stolen, and not intended for the public eye? Can we expect you to start taking down rips from romhacks where people didn't give permission to have their characters suddenly uploaded here? Can we expect most of the site to be taken down since there was no permission given to rip assets from the vast majority of these games?

TheGmodNugget: Harmful would be the personal data (email, probably orphaned by now) included in the documents and the source code itself. That aside, it would be most beneficial to preserve the non-personal data.
