I think the Mario sprite is there as a placeholder during development. Also the console wars mainly were a thing in the west, but this game was developed in Japan, where console rivalry wasn't taken very seriously.

@Dolphman Well to be fair he spent most of his time later as a more distinct-looking robot.

@Doc von Schmeltwick Indeed it is. Patrick Spaziante is a big fan of the game, which explains the cameos. This one stands out, which also features more Sega cameos.
Yeah, that's Uncle Chuck and Sonic's dad, Jules as he's called. Very bland design compared to the dad seen in the obscure manga. (Just a fringe, vest and hiking boots)
