@WhiteFelineWonder To make the animation run smoothly, they didn't store all 108 frames separately. The green and black frames shown below are how they're actually stored, and the game just cycles between those blue palettes you see at the bottom, which helps gives it the illusion of movement. The game's programmer, Jon Burton, explains it better in this video

I’ve only seen the blue variation of the game over screen. Does the black and green variation occur at the final boss? That’s my only guess.
