wrong, these sprites originated from the snes version and were then used in the macintosh port (and therefore the 3do and apple 2 gs ports that were based off mac)
as the guy who ripped them they were redesigned because the snes handled sprites differently (each sprite can use one palette line and as such the hud uses 16 colors total from the end of the palette), the game itself uses the rest of the colors since it's using mode 7 to double the screen size (therefore why the hud is sprites and not part of the background like gba)

@Yawackhary Neither of them, iD Software wanted to redesign the graphics.
Those sprites came originally from the Macintosh port, which featured sprites and textures with way more detail that the original DOS game (640x480p vs the 240p of the original game)

@Dragonick You got it (DOS 320x200 for 256 colors, SNES 256x240), also the SNES had a different way of doing the palettes compared to PCs at the time. It could also be a request from its publisher Imagineer for more detailed sprites but we don't know for sure.

Funnily enough, these are different sprites to what's in the PC release. Why did they redraw them? Was it screen resolution differences, or something else?
Also, gotta love the Microsoft Paint image caption.
