Hard to believe this is a Mode 7 background, meaning that this is all sprites, like the boss backgrounds in SMW. This is honestly amazing, with the mode switching so smoothly on the fly as you walk through the fog, transitioning to this, appearing to be the hills seen earlier shrouded in mist. This game is honestly amazing.
